Tour of the Netherlands 2002 - 6 |

1: Harwich to Enschede | 2: Springendal | 3: to Lochem | 4: To Kootwijk |
5: Den Treek | 6: Little and Large! | 7: Trips from De Haan | 8: Zuider Zee and Home |
From Den Treek we left the shaded wooded region and tree lined roads and rolling country side of the east and headed across the flat treeless reclaimed lands of the west. With the weather hot sun and no clouds you appreciated the few trees we saw, such as these at the mouth of the canal at Nieuwegein where the canal joins the Lek river. In a change of strategy, we had decided to camp one night only at the NTKC Haastrecht site at Vlist. This is one of the smallest if not the smallest NTKC sites. The only other people camping were the Kampmeesters. We spent a pleasant evening with them - they were on there way to the Hoek on route for cycle tour of England. We later saw them at De Haan. This is camping at altitudes expected in the Netherlands - 5 feet below sea level. İStephen Dee 12 Aug 2002 ID P8120274 |

Despite being a very small site - the site had campfire circle, or rather campfire and garden bench! İStephen Dee 12 Aug 2002 ID P8120269

From Vlist we cycled in to Gouda, to get food supplies as we had ran out at the campsite. However Gouda on a Monday morning is shut - hence an almost empty cheese market. When you are cycle camping in the Netherlands, not only is there strict Sunday observance, many shops also do not open Monday morning as well as having other half day closures, so planning food supplies is very important. To the east of Gouda is a wonderful network of lakes and canals which we cycled around to get to Hazerswoude for our next campsite. This is Ceri-Siân looking longingly at the Italian ice cream. Location mushroom 217126 İStephen Dee 12 Aug 2002 ID P8120291

The change of strategy was to allow us to go from one extreme to another, NTKC's Het Groene Hart site at Hazerswoude. This is the largest NTKC site, with 4 toilet blocks, N, E, S and W. We stayed just the one night here. Ceri-Siân wanted to stay here after she had seen the site pennon with the hare. İStephen Dee 12 Aug 2002 ID P8120302

We were the only campers on the vast site! Fortunately for us, the Kampmeester from the previous night were just packing up as we arrived, so they booked us in an left us to it! This is even greater Dutch altitude camping - 15 feet below sea level! İStephen Dee 12 Aug 2002 ID P8120311 |

The site also had a club house, the only NTKC site at the time to have one. İStephen Dee 13 Aug 2002 ID P8130313

From Hazerwoude we headed back to De Haan via Rotterdam and Delft. We managed to find a nice green route into and through Rotterdam. This is on the way in, along a nice waterway system the Rotte. İStephen Dee 13 Aug 2002 ID P8130315 |
This is about a mile from the centre of Rotterdam. I believe this is Prinsenmolen. İStephen Dee 13 Aug 2002 ID P8130321 |
