Chinatown is characterised by its narrow streets, street traders and festivals, and the mix of peoples.

Whilst tower blocks are the norm in modern Singapore, skyscrapers are restricted to the business district.

Chinatown Streets - Back Street Views
LH view shows a back street between the tourist routes. RH view shows how modern living demands air conditioning, note all the AC units on the walls of the houses. When I went in 82, the norm was open windows or shutters and large slow moving ceiling fans.

Chinatown Streets - Street Views
Street traders crowd the central area of Chinatown. Note the famous Sri Marianman Hindu temple in the background. Chinatown is a reflection of Singapore, it is not just the domain of the Chinese, in addition to the Sri Marianman temple on the same side of the road on the next corner is the Masjid Jamae mosque.

On a Sunday a couple of lorries/mini-buss stop on the busy road and out pops a procession that then proceeds down temple street.
